THE “SWINGING” ’60s
The pendulum swung from one extreme to the other.
It began as a continuation of the “1950”s “couture where Women were the focus and their husbands money payed the bills.
By 1964 it moved to the “mod” young, no matter what the wearers real age, and was kicky and colourful, inspired not by tradition instead a bit of an Edwardian throwback, crossed with a bit of pre teen, and making use of all the new materials, primarily synthetic. It came compliments of England, “in a burst of new shapes and colours” and was called “the British invasion.”
The later 60’s, as the power of the people was being claimed by the newly adult youth, they took to the roads and the to air to explore the world beyond their home plate. They came back as newly enlightened hippies, bringing oddments of foreign places mixed with 2nd hand thrift and they believed in the-power of love. Global Fashion from high to low would take its cues from these travellers.
